In Manipur, there is no surplus produce in agricultural, fishery, sericulture and horticulture sectors, etc. However, in the handloom sector, surplus handloom fabrics are regularly produced. The national and State Award conferred to outstanding weavers and artisans are only a token of recognition but there is no enough financial support for commercial production. In order to provide/support on raw material, imparting skill, marketing for sale of handloom fabrics produced by the Awardees, the scheme for Awardees was introduced in 2016-17 to help them to produce their award winning products on commercial scale thereby creating scope for keeping the production cycle alive and sustain the existing employment of handloom weavers.
