COTTON PLANTATION SCHEME

The Directorate of Handlooms & Textiles, Manipur implemented the following schemes and projects under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, North Eastern Council, Shillong and State Plan Schemes. Therefore, the Directorate implemented various schemes/projects from two different sources of funding, i.e. Centrally Sponsored Schemes and State Plan Scheme. Major schemes implemented in the last 5 years are given hereunder:

State Plan Schemes:

(i)       COTTON PLANTATION SCHEME:

The Government of Manipur in 2017-18 decided in principle to re-establish the Spinning Mill of Manipur afresh. In order to supply cotton fibre to the Spinning Mill, plantation of cotton has also been formulated. Accordingly, Hon’ble Minister (Textiles, Commerce & Industry), Manipur formally launched the cotton plantations on 13th March, 2018 at Kwatha Village under Tengnoupal District. Plantations have, thus, started in Pherzawl, Jiribam, Tamenglong and Ukhrul Districts. With this initiative, it is planned to made available the locally spun yarnto weavers of Manipur and also export to other States/countries as well.It is planned to take up in selective villages of Tengnoupal, Pherzawl, Jiribam, Tamenglong and Ukhrul District recommended by the Agriculture Department. The plantation will be taken up in 2354 hectare to produce 7.22 lakh kg fibre.

Objective is to generate more employment in production chain right from farmers with cotton plantation to spinning, weaving, garment manufacturing and business of cloths and ready-made garment in Manipur.
