Loom Upgradation Scheme

Technically, weaving is a process for producing of cloth. To produce cloth, interlacement of two yarns is taking place on loom. Loom is machine for producing cloth. The yarn running vertical or longitudinal on a loom is called warp and another yarn running across the warp horizontally is called weft. The weft is carried by a pirn with the help of a shuttle which is propelled by picker in case of shuttle loom. For producing a cloth, loom is, thus, required as basic machinery. Broadly, there are five types of looms in Manipur, such as, loin or primitive loom, throw shuttle loom, fly shuttle loom, self-picking loom and power-driven loom. A loom is live saving vehicle for earning her/his livelihood. In order to generate employment, loom to loomless weavers were provided under this scheme.

Objective is to provide loom for all weavers. Under this, loom will be provided to loomless weavers, switch over from loin/throw to fly shuttle loom, replacement of old & worn out parts/looms and re-activation of idle loom for generating employment under weaving activity. Distribution of loom after the introduction of the scheme is given below:
